About This Service

Water Softener Installation

Hertfordshire has some of the hardest water in the UK. Affinity Water's supply comes from the chalk, and it leaves limescale on boilers, shower heads, taps and appliances. A water softener stops most of it at source.

JLP Plumbing installs water softeners throughout Hertfordshire. A properly installed water softener extends the life of your boiler, protects bathroom fittings, reduces cleaning time, and makes your skin and hair feel softer.

We install salt-based ion exchange softeners from leading brands, positioned on the incoming mains supply. Installation typically takes half a day and includes a bypass valve so you can still access hard water for drinking and garden use.

FAQs

Common Questions

Do you offer free quotes for water softener installation?
Yes. Quotes for water softener installation are free and there's no obligation. We look at what you need, explain the options and agree everything with you in writing before any work begins.
Are you fully qualified and insured?
Absolutely. JLP Plumbing is fully qualified and carries £5M public liability and £10M employers' liability insurance, so you're completely covered. Every job is backed by our workmanship guarantee.
Which areas do you cover?
We're based in Letchworth Garden City and cover water softener installation across Hertfordshire, including Hitchin, Baldock, Stevenage, St Albans, Harpenden, Welwyn Garden City and surrounding towns.
How quickly can you start?
It depends on the size of the job, but we pride ourselves on fast response times. Call us on 01462 510001 and we'll let you know our earliest availability, emergencies are prioritised.
How does a water softener work?
Hard water carries dissolved calcium and magnesium, which cause limescale. A softener runs your incoming water through a resin that swaps those minerals for sodium, and every so often it rinses the resin clean with a salt solution so it keeps working. Fitted on the main supply, it softens the water for the whole house.
Can you drink softened water?
Most adults can, but the Drinking Water Inspectorate advises against using artificially softened water to make up baby feeds, because of the extra sodium. That's why homes with a softener usually keep one kitchen tap on unsoftened mains water for drinking and cooking, and we can plumb that in when we fit the softener.
What affects the cost of a water softener?
Mainly the size of your household, the type of softener you choose, and how easy it is to connect to your incoming main where it enters the house. A water softener is planned work, so the quote is free, and everything is agreed with you before any work begins.
