Drain Unblocking and Drain Repairs in Letchworth Garden City

Rated 5.0 on Google · Fully insured

Letchworth Garden City is where our team is based, so a blocked drain here is close to home for us. As a local plumbing and drainage company, we've cleared blocked toilets and drains in Letchworth homes this year, from a slow kitchen waste to an outside drain backing up into the garden. When a simple clear won't shift it, we jet the pipe clean. If it keeps coming back, we look inside with a camera and repair what we find.

Drain jetting in Letchworth Garden City

Rods and plungers push through a blockage, which gets the water moving but often leaves the cause behind. High pressure jetting sends water along the inside of the pipe at force, scouring away grease, silt and fine roots from the walls, so the whole run is clean rather than just the blocked spot. We use it when a drain is greasy, silted up or has blocked before, and after clearing a blockage further down the line.

Why drains block in Letchworth homes

Letchworth's homes span more than a century. The original Garden City cottages near the centre date from the early 1900s, the Grange was built from 1947, Jackmans in the 1960s, and Lordship and Manor Park from the 1970s. Older drain runs often have more joints, and over time a joint can shift or let roots in. That's where repeat blockages tend to start.

The town was planned with tree lined streets and generous gardens, which is part of its character, but roots will always look for water. In the kitchen and bathroom, the usual causes are fat poured down the sink and wipes flushed down the toilet. Wipes don't break down the way toilet paper does, even when the packet says flushable.

When it keeps coming back: a camera survey

If the same drain blocks again and again, there's a reason for it. A CCTV survey puts a camera inside the pipe so we can see what's there: a displaced joint, a crack, roots or a sunken section. Then we can recommend the right fix, whether that's a patch repair, relining the pipe from the inside or replacing a section.

Drain repairs in Letchworth Garden City

Clearing a damaged drain only buys time, because waste keeps catching on the damage and the blockage comes back. Once the camera has shown what's wrong, the repair is agreed with you before any work begins, and it's one of three kinds.

Patch repair. When the damage is in one place, such as a single crack or a joint that has opened, the repair is made from inside the pipe at that spot only.

Relining. When the damage runs along the drain, a resin lining is fed through and set hard inside the old pipe, giving you a new pipe within it. In a town planned around tree lined streets and big gardens, that matters: roots get in through cracks and gaps, and a lining closes them off along its whole length.

Replacing a section. A drain that has collapsed or sunk can't be lined, so we dig down to that section and replace it.

Patch repairs and relining are done from inside the drain, so in most cases there's no trench across your lawn or drive. Every repair is guaranteed for 12 months.

Blocked toilets in Letchworth Garden City: the toilet or the drain?

When only the toilet is slow to clear, the blockage is usually in the pan or the pipe just behind it. When the bath, shower or sink is slow as well, or water is rising in the outside gully, the problem is further down in the drain, and plunging the toilet won't shift it. Either way, stop flushing until it's cleared, so the water has nowhere to back up to. We clear both, so you don't need to work out which it is before you call.

“I needed the washing machine waste replaced as part of the outside pipe has failed due to its age. Harry who carried out the work was very polite and worked in a professional manner. I will be using this company in the future and recommending them to others.”

We're open 7am to 9pm Monday to Friday and 7am to 7pm on Saturday and Sunday, and we reply to enquiries within 2 hours. A drain backing up into the house goes to the front of the queue. Stop running water until it's cleared, so nothing else has to find a way out.

Blocked drain questions from Letchworth

Do plumbers sort blocked drains?
We do. We're a drain company as well as a plumbing company: clearing drains is part of our work alongside plumbing and bathrooms, so if a blocked drain turns out to be a broken waste pipe or a leaking joint, the same team can fix that too.
How do I know if I need jetting or just rodding?
A one off blockage close to a sink or a gully can often be cleared with rods. If the drain is greasy, silted up, or has blocked before, jetting is the better choice because it cleans the whole pipe rather than just making a hole through the blockage. We'll tell you which it needs once we've seen it.
Will you find out why my drain keeps blocking?
Yes. If a drain blocks repeatedly, we can survey it with a camera to see what's inside, then explain the fix before any work begins.
What affects the cost of unblocking a drain?
Mainly how easy the drain is to reach, how deep and far down the blockage is, what's causing it, and whether it needs jetting or a camera survey. A call out fee applies to drain visits, and we confirm it before we attend. Everything else is agreed with you before any work begins.
How do I unblock an outside drain?
Put on rubber gloves, lift the gully grid if it comes up easily, and clear out any leaves, silt or debris you can reach. Then pour a bucket of hot water, not boiling, down to see if it flows. If the blockage is further along, or the manhole chamber is full, it needs rods or jetting. Call us, and if the drain is shared with neighbours, it may be Anglian Water's to clear.
